Bostonianz617 & Marco Loco Films Presents: MA$$'s Top 10 Projects of 2010 [A Year In Review]

It's been a crazy year for Boston Hip Hop. We here at Bostonianz617 felt it was neccessary to re-live some of the hometown releases that have contributed in making 2010 so memorable. Here's the year in review as we see it. We present our top 10 projects from Boston and the surrounding areas that have stayed in heaviest rotation throughout 2010. Happy New Year Ya'll ... #2011

*Honorable Mention: 7L & Esoteric - "1212" [Album]

We had to at least mention 7L & Esoteric's 2010 release "1212". We didn't end up including it in our top 10 (amidst some controversy), but it's definetly worth checking out. This most recent collaborative album was a long time in the making and the Boston duo seemed to bring their best to the table. The album features hip hop heavy weights Celph Titled, Inspectah Deck, Sadat X, Alchemist, Evidence, Ill Bill, Reef The Lost Cauze, Vinnie Paz & Statik Selektah. If you've been a long time fan of both 7L & Eso then this album is a must have, and if you're just discovering them this wouldn't be a bad album to start with. Make sure you hit the jump and support the album on itunes...

10. Frank Fetti - S.D.A: "Sex, Drugs & Automobiles" [Mixtape]

Up & coming Boston rapper Frank Fetti really surprised us with his 2010 release "Sex, Drugs & Automobiles." We hadn't heard much from him prior to 2010, and I'm pretty sure this mixtape constitutes his first official project. It's produced entirely by his producer CT Ike, and mostly featured sampled 80's songs which gave the tape a more unique and nostalgic feel. We look forward to hearing more from Frank Fetti in the new year. Make sure you hit the jump and check the tape...

9. Masspike Miles - "Superfly" Gangsta Grillz Special Edition [Mixtape]

2010 proved to be a huge year for rising Boston R&B star Masspike Miles. He was able to make the jump into the mainstream with his mixtape "Superfly" backed by both Gangsta Grillz & The Maybach Music Group. Despite what some might say, Rick Ross may have had the biggest year in mainstream hip hop during 2010. He helped take Masspike's career to a new level, providing several features on the mixtape along with the likes of Joell Ortiz, Freeway, Statik Selektah, Red Cafe, Triple C's, LA The Darkman, Willie The Kid & more. Masspike Miles has gone from local talent to touring the world, and that says a lot for what he's capable of. He continues to hold down Boston, and we assume we'll be hearing a lot more from him in 2011. Hit the jump for the DL link...

8. M-Dot - M.aking D.oubters O.ver T.hink [Mixtape]

Fresh off the release of his latest mixtape (if you want to call it that; had much more of an album feel) "Run MPC" (w/ Jean Maron), Lynn's M-Dot is back to work offering this follow up mixtape appropriately titled "M.aking D.oubters O.ver T.hink." If you read our review of the tape, then you already know it's rockin. The mixtape features Snowgoons, Masta Ace, King Magnetic, Chaundon, Cymarshall Law, Reef The Lost Cauze, Bekay, Big Pooh (Little Brother), Wordsworth, Tek (Smif N' Wessun) along with local legends Jaysaun (Special Teamz), Krumbsnatcha, Easy Money (ST.), Dre Robinson & more all make appearences on the mixtape. Combined with hosting duties and co-signs from the likes of Billy Danze from the legendary M.O.P. and established hometown DJ, G.I. Joe (Immortal Technique), it's relatively easy to see that this release certainly does not dissapoint. Hit the jump...

7. Jaysaun & DJ Revolution - "Game Of Breath" [Mixtape]

Jaysaun set the year off right when he released his mixtape "Game of Breath" alongside DJ Revolution. I'm pretty sure the tape leaked towards the end of '09, but the official release date was January of 2010 so we're treating it as a 2010 release. Jay is able to maintains his solid rhyming ability that we're all used to from his days with the Kreators and more recently Special Teamz. The production on the tape was also pretty crazy, which we can appreciate. It seems like a lot of emcees these days throw together a tape consisting mostly of recycled industry beats and rush to put it out; you can tell Jaysaun put a lot of time and effort into this one, and it certainly shows. Original beats, original rhymes. Support the release, and hit the jump for the purchase link...

6. Reks - "In Between The Lines" Volume 2 [Mixtape]

If you're like us, you've been eagerly anticipating for Rek's self-titled official follow up to "Grey Hairs" all year. To tide over the fans until the first quarter of 2011, Reks dropped 2 new mixtapes in 2010; "In Between The Lines Volumes 1 & 2. We decided to go with Vol. 2 for our Best of list. The mixtape features Jon Hope, Truck North, Phonte, Reef The Lost Cauze, Termanology, Sha Stimuli, Slaine, Jaysaun and several others; with production handled by the likes of Statik Selektah, Soul Theory, Nottz, Blaze P, Rain, Moss & more. With a line-up like that, how could you go wrong? Precisely why this tape lands at our #6 spot. We look forward to hearing a lot more from Reks in the new year...

5. N.B.S. - "The Prelude" [Mixtape]

Cambridge duo N.B.S. contributed to 2010 in a big way with their mixtape release, "The Prelude" on Big Bang Records. N.B.S. have been doing this for a while now, and are undoubtedly Boston vets when it comes to everything hip hop. They've released serveral solid mixtapes over the years, and there 2010 effort was no different. One of those tapes you can listen to all the way through without having to skip any tracks. Production includes Stu-Bangas, Matty Trump, Sicknature, J. Cardim, etc., so you already know it's full of bangers. Hosted by Shadyvilles Mr. Peter Parker. Hit the jump for the free download link, and if you're looking for the tagless version show your support and head on over to itunes...

4. Phinelia - "Part Time Rapper" [Mixtape]

You have to respect what Phinelia's been able to accomplish in 2010. Not only did he release a bunch of free music for the fans, he has risen up through the ranks as one of the more prominent names in Boston hip hop. His mixtape release, "Part Time Rapper" embodies street music to the fullest, and has that realness quality that a lot of emcees have failed to replicate. A healthy combination of original and well-selected industry beats, Phinelia gives the listener a barrage of enticing tracks. 2011 could definetly be his year...

3. Statik Selektah & Termanology - "1982" [Album]

2010 was definetly the year of the Showoff. Man, it seems like the Boston based crew has been involved with just about everything this year. This collaborative effort from Statik & Term is one of those classic albums where emcee and producer just click, and the music speaks for itself. With high profile features including the likes of Freeway, Cassidy, Saigon, Bun B, Inspectah Deck, Xzibit, etc., and flawless production handled entirely by Statik himself, 1982 make strides in becoming almost like a modern day Gangstarr. I don't think there may be a duo that works harder, and has the type of versatiliy and consistency that they possess. Hit the jump for the itunes link and lookout for their new E.P...

2. Slaine - "A World With No Skies" [Album]

Although we're not entirely sure if Slaines, "A World With No Skies" has even been officially released, we're treating it like a 2010 release. Slaine had some sample clearing issues which caused the album's original October release date to get pushed back. After releasing a mixtape to tide fans over, "A World With No Skies" eventually leaked. At his release party in Boston Slaine suggested that he may even consider giving the album out for free. If you're an avid Slaine fans like we are, odds are you've heard the album by now. Features on the album include Vinnie Paz, La Coka Nostra, Reef The Lost Cauze, Jaysaun, etc. Aggressive rhymes, and head nodding beats throughout, Slaine definetly put the work in to create a solid album. Hit the jump, and support the artist...

1. Purpose (of Tragic Allies) - "Better Than Your Album" [Mixtape]

If you're unfamiliar, Purpose makes up 1/3 of the Tragic Allies crew, repping Lynn, MA. with features from Singapore Kane, Ghetto Lion, both Code Nine + Estee Nack of the Tragic Allies, multiple-tracks featuring cuts from DJ Slipwax, and production from such artists as KOS, Abstrakt, Archimedes, Bug, White Lotus and Purpose himself, this tape does not dissapoint. It's safe to say that if you like the majority of the music we post on the site, then this is a must download. Purpose perfects the dark, grimy sound in his rhymes which the Allies seem to portray in all aspects of their projects. Touching on subject matter which embodies street life in all its avenues, it's clear Purpose has been through it all; more than proof why his mixtape is probably "Better Than Your Album."
